Cookies are small text files that a website stores in your browser. We use as few as we can: necessary ones, which the site needs to work, and analytics cookies from Google Analytics, which count visits so we can improve the site. Analytics is on unless you turn it off.
You can change your choice at any time in Cookie settings; the link is also at the bottom of every page.
Necessary
These keep the site secure and working, and don’t need your consent. You can block them in your browser, but parts of the site, such as the WHOIS lookup, will then stop working.
| Cookie | Duration | Description |
|---|---|---|
| __Host-htc-guard | 1 day | Set when you use the WHOIS lookup. It shows that your browser has solved a small puzzle, which keeps automated scrapers out. |
| htc_consent | 12 months | Remembers your cookie choice, so the notice isn’t shown on every page. |
| ws_bo | Until sign-out, 12 hours at most | Our staff only: signing in to the website’s back office. Never set for visitors. |
Analytics — on unless you turn them off
These count visits and show which pages people use and how they find the site, so we can improve it. UK law allows such cookies without asking first, as long as we tell you and you can turn them off — which you can at any time in Cookie settings. Google processes the data only on our behalf and doesn’t use it for advertising; Google Analytics 4 doesn’t store IP addresses.
| Cookie | Duration | Description |
|---|---|---|
| _ga | 2 years | Google Analytics: tells one browser from another, so that visits can be counted. |
| _ga_… | 2 years | Google Analytics: keeps track of your current visit. |

Other storage in your browser
Some pages keep small notes in your browser’s session storage — for example, so that a WHOIS result page that refreshes itself does so only once. They are deleted when you close the tab and are never sent to us.
Changing your choice
Open Cookie settings at the bottom of any page and turn analytics off. We then delete the Google Analytics cookies and reload the page; they won’t be set again while analytics is off. You can also delete or block cookies in your browser’s settings.
