Domain for a website on a site builder: Tilda and others

Domains and DNS2 min read

How to point your domain at a website built in a site builder: A records in your DNS zone or the builder’s nameservers — and how to keep your email working.

Is your website built in a site builder, with the domain registered elsewhere? You need to point the domain at the builder’s servers — you do not have to transfer the domain to do it.

First, in the site builder

Enter your domain in the site settings. In Tilda, go to Site Settings → Domain, enter the domain and save; Tilda will show the IP address that you need to add to your DNS zone. A custom domain can be connected in Tilda on the Personal plan and above. Other builders work in a similar way: the domain settings tell you which records to create.

Method 1. A records in your DNS zone

This suits you if the domain uses the DNS servers of a provider whose records you can edit. The records stay where they are, so email and the verification records of other services keep working as before.

  1. Open the DNS zone editor of the provider that hosts the DNS for your domain.
  2. You need two A records — one for the domain itself (name @) and one for www, both with the IP address from the site builder’s settings.
  3. If the name @ or www already has an A or CNAME record, edit it and change the value; if not, add a new record.

If you cannot edit the records there, change them with the provider that holds them — or switch the domain to the nameservers of the provider where you want to manage them: Which DNS servers to use.

Method 2. The site builder’s nameservers

Tilda can run the DNS itself. Set the domain’s nameservers to ns1.tildadns.com and ns2.tildadns.com at your registrar. From then on you manage the domain’s records in Tilda, and the records at your previous DNS provider stop working. In Tilda you can add only MX and TXT records — if you need others, use the first method.

If the domain uses our hosting or email

If the domain has been added to our hosting, its records are managed in cPanel — DNS records in cPanel. Hosting email depends on the domain’s records: if you change the @ record, email may stop arriving. To keep email working, contact our support team through the contact form before you change the records — we will set it up together.

How long to wait

New records start working within a few hours, sometimes up to a day. Once the domain opens your site in the builder, turn on HTTPS in the builder’s settings. If the site still does not open, see Troubleshooting DNS problems.
