Transferring a domain: to another registrar and to us

Domains and DNS2 min read

How to move a domain to another registrar — the transfer code (AuthInfo, EPP), confirmation, timings and restrictions — and how to move a domain to us.

Contents

Transferring a domain means changing its registrar, that is, the company through which the domain is renewed. The owner, the registration period and the DNS records stay the same, and your website and email carry on working. Handing a domain over to a different owner is a separate procedure: Domain owner: how to find out who it is and how to change it.

How to transfer a domain away from us

  1. Contact our support team and tell us which domain you are transferring.
  2. A confirmation message is sent to the domain owner’s email address or phone number — confirm the request within three working days.
  3. Get the transfer code — AuthInfo, which for generic domains is called the EPP code — and give it to the new registrar. The code is valid for 20 days.
  4. The new registrar starts the transfer, which usually takes a few days.

The email address and phone number used for confirmation are taken from the domain owner’s details. If they are out of date, ask our support team to update them first.

When a domain can’t be transferred

  • the domain’s registration has expired — renew it first;
  • restrictions have been placed on the domain because of a court order or another dispute;
  • a generic domain (.com, .net, .org) was registered or transferred less than 60 days ago.

The registration period you have already paid for moves with the domain, and the money for it is not refunded. Transferring a generic domain usually extends the registration by a year — you pay the new registrar for that year.

What happens to the DNS records

Changing registrar does not change the DNS records. If the domain’s records are hosted with us, decide in advance where they will be kept from now on. The new registrar usually offers its own DNS servers: first create all the records there — for the website, email and service verifications — and only then change the domain’s DNS servers. Otherwise your website and email will stop working.

How to transfer a domain to us

  1. Get the transfer code from your current registrar. For generic domains, also remove the transfer lock (Transfer Lock).
  2. Contact our support team with the domain name and the transfer code, and we will advise you on how to proceed.
  3. A confirmation request is sent to the domain owner’s email address or phone number — confirm it within five days.
  4. The transfer completes within five days. After that you can manage the domain and change its DNS records in your control panel.
