Where to find visitor numbers, website errors and logs in cPanel: Awstats, Webalizer, Errors and Raw Access.
Contents
All the statistics are in cPanel, in the Metrics section:
| Awstats | the most detailed: visits by day, popular pages, where visitors came from, search phrases, bots |
| Webalizer | the same, but simpler, with charts |
| Analog Stats | a short summary by month |
| Errors | the latest website errors — the first place to look if your website shows an error |
| Raw Access | the full access logs, as an archive for each day — if you want to analyse them yourself |
| Bandwidth | how much traffic has gone to the website, email and FTP |
The statistics are updated with a delay of up to a day. To see visitors straight away and understand what they do on your website, add an analytics tracker, such as Google Analytics. Its code is inserted into your website’s pages.
PHP errors
If your website shows a blank page or “500 Internal Server Error”, look at the error_log file. It appears in the website’s folder (usually public_html) when a PHP script fails, and says which file and which line the problem is in.
You can temporarily show errors directly on the page: in cPanel, go to MultiPHP INI Editor → display_errors. Just remember to turn it off again — visitors should not see errors.
