Limits on sending email

Email2 min read

How many emails per hour you can send from a domain on each hosting plan, and what happens if you exceed the limit.

On shared hosting, every domain has a limit on how many emails per hour can be sent from its addresses. It protects against mass mailings from hacked mailboxes and websites, which would otherwise get the mail of everyone on the server marked as spam.

Emails to external addresses are counted, wherever they are sent from: an email program, webmail or a website script. A trial hosting account is limited to 10 emails per hour: it is there to try out the hosting, not to send mail.

What happens if you exceed the limit

If you go slightly over the limit, no emails are lost: the server holds them back and sends them in the next hour. If you try to send a quarter or more above the limit, the extra emails are not sent — the sender receives an error notification containing the text has exceeded the max emails per hour.

If the limit is not enough

  • Mass mailings to a customer list should be sent through a mailing service: these have their own servers, so the addresses of your domain will not end up on blocklists.
  • If you send a lot of email in your everyday work — move to a higher plan or to a cloud server, where you set up the mail server yourself.
  • If a limit notification arrives unexpectedly — a mailbox or website may have been hacked. Change the mailbox passwords, update your CMS and plugins, and contact our support team through the contact form — we will help you find the source.
